Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics (ANAM)

Description of Services

The ANAM is a proven computer-based cognitive assessment tool designed to detect the speed and accuracy of attention, memory and thinking ability (See FAQ for more information). The ANAM is available to all Service Members, Retired Service Members and DOD Civilians for pre-deployment or clinical assessment (with consult) purposes.

Preparing for your visit

Individuals with an ANAM appointment may arrive to the clinic at their scheduled time. Please remember to bring a valid military ID. Units who have arranged mass ANAM testing are asked to arrive in uniform 15 minutes prior to their scheduled start time.

Q. What is ANAM?
A. The Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics (ANAM) is a series of computer-based tests of cognitive domains including attention, concentration, reaction time, memory, processing speed, and decision-making. The results of the ANAM provides healthcare staff with data to evaluate an individual's change in cognitive functioning over time.
Q. How long does an ANAM assessment take to complete?
A. The standard ANAM battery used by the U.S. Department of Defense takes approximately 20 minutes to administer. Please allow 45 minutes to complete your appointment.
Q. What if I’ve already taken the ANAM?
A. All Services members are required to complete their pre-deployment ANAM within 12 months prior to deployment. This assessment is a mandatory requirement.
Q. Your healthcare provider may also arrange for you to complete an ANAM post-injury to help determine the best course of treatment.
A. ANAM software provides an almost limitless number of alternative forms and combinations to facilitate repeated-measures testing.
Q. If I perform poorly on the ANAM, will it prevent me from deploying?
A. ANAM pre-deployment testing is not a diagnostic tool and is not used to determine if a Service Member is deployable or non-deployable.
Q. Where do my results go?
A. ANAM assessment results are considered protected health information and are placed in your electronic medical record. The assessment results will be securely stored electronically in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
